The process of many transport companies can roughly be divided into 6 steps. The goal of a good telematics system should be to support the fleet operator in as many steps as possible. In this post, we will focus on the following three phases:

  1. Order receipt
  2. Calculation
  3. Dispatching / Scheduling

Order receipt

A comprehensive telematics system should support you as early as possible. Some telematics systems help you capture incoming orders.

Calculation

In the next step, each order should be calculated taking into account the following parameters:

  • Distance
  • Tolls
  • Fuel consumption
  • GHG emissions
  • Estimated travel time
  • General vehicle costs (€ / km)
  • Personnel costs

Dispatching / Scheduling

Once you have captured and calculated the orders, the system should be able to compile the orders into routes and optimize them. After the orders have been consolidated into optimized routes, you should be able to easily assign them to a vehicle. Ideally, you can assign the routes / orders to a vehicle via drag & drop. The driver should receive the order directly into the vehicle on a mobile device (tablet, navigation system, or smartphone) and be able to start the tour fully automatically from there. A major advantage of telematics lies in the ability to continuously monitor the fleet. As a fleet operator or dispatcher, you can always see where your vehicles are and whether the planned routes are being adhered to. Additionally, you can access further information such as remaining driving time, tire pressure, estimated time of arrival, and many other pieces of information. With this information, you can significantly increase the service level and transparency of delivery.
